CONVENING ON BEST PRACTICES

IN MEDICAL NUTRITION EDUCATION

Dates: April 28-29, 2026
Location: AAMC Headquarters
655 K Street NW, Washington, D.C.

Nutrition is fundamental to health, yet poor dietary habits remain a leading cause of chronic disease. Physicians are uniquely positioned to help reduce public confusion and guide patients toward healthier choices, but nutrition must be further prioritized in medical training. Following a 2023 Summit on Medical Education in Nutrition, an expert panel published a Consensus Statement in JAMA Network Open on Proposed Nutrition Education Competencies for inclusion in undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. This Convening, organized by the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative (TKC), hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and with the active participation of National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), is being held to identify effective strategies to teach and assess these competencies in medical education settings.

We invited medical educators to apply to present their respective ‘best practices’ involving teaching and evaluation of the proposed nutrition competencies. We received more than 90 applications for the 20 presenter slots, and final selections are currently underway. The final program will be posted in the first quarter of 2026.

Please note: This Convening will be invite-only, with approximately 40 stakeholder guests and 20 presenters.  While we won’t be able to open registration to the public or accommodate additional attendees beyond those invited or selected as presenters, we will be producing (and publishing in a public journal) convening proceedings that will capture key insights, themes, and best practices emerging from the event.
